Pongo Receives Mayor’s Arts Award

Pongo Teen Writing was honored to receive a Seattle Mayor's Arts Award in 2013

Pongo Teen Writing was honored to receive a Seattle Mayor’s Arts Award in 2013, in the category “Arts as the How” for deep and lasting impact on social issues. The ceremony was held on August 30th at Seattle Center, and was recorded.

The photos on this page show (1) some happy poets, who were present at the ceremony to share the honor; (2) the award itself, designed by famous Seattle glass artist Dale Chihuly; and (3) some Pongo mentors and poets along with the Seattle mayor, Seattle Arts Commission, Seattle Office of Arts and Culture, and other honorees.

There were 600 nominations for arts awards, and Pongo was happy to share the stage with 826 Seattle, Frye Art Museum, Barbara Earl Thomas, Seattle Repertory Theater, and Preston Singletary.

The beautiful poets in the Pongo “Arts as the How” video are from Friends of the Children, a mentoring organization. That video was created by some talented young women and their mentors at REEL GRRLS.

Thanks to Seattle’s Mayor, Arts Commission, and Office of Arts and Culture!
