All of us at Pongo are wishing you a happy Pride Month! Celebrated annually across the world in June, Pride Month convenes the LGBTQIA+ community and its allies to participate in educational initiatives, organizing efforts, celebrations, and more, to express their support for the community and a sense of pride in their sexuality.

Pride Month traces its roots back to the Stonewall In, a popular gay club located in New York City’s Greenwich Village. In the 1960’s, members of the LGBTQIA+ community sought refuge from the persecution and discrimination they were subjected to in their daily lives and at other public venues, and relied on the Inn as a safe place for freedom of expression and their sexual identity. On the night of June 28th, 1969, New York City police raided the Stonewall Inn, sparking a brave resistance not only from the patrons who were attacked that night, but from the surrounding community of allies who were horrified by the display of state violence. The protests and organizing that followed catalyzed the modern LGBTQIA+ civil rights movement, and it was in the aftermath of the Stonewall uprising that the first Pride celebration was established.

Since then, billions of people have come together to celebrate Pride. Community members, families, friends, and allies have created a variety of ways to honor the memory of the Stonewall uprising and celebrate the LGBTQIA+ in all of its diversity.

All of us at Pongo know that equity, justice, and safety are all prerequisites for healthy development and healing, particularly among young people. And with the rights of LGBTQI+ people continuing to be under assault, and discrimination and violence remaining all too prevalent, all of us at Pongo know that offering support and solidarity to the community is vital.

In light of that, we want to invite you to join us in sending love to those who are scared to come out, have lost loved ones by coming out, can’t come out due to safety concerns, are unsure of their sexuality/gender, don’t have a support system, and who are out and proud! Getting involved in Pride Month this year is a great way to do that.

How to Celebrate Pride Month

One of the primary ways to celebrate Pride Month is to attend the parade in honor of those who participated in the Stonewall uprising and resisted police repression. We encourage you to look up the Pride Month celebrations in your respective city.

And even if you don’t identify as a LGBTQIA+ member you can still advocate for members of the community. Check out the list below for ideas on how you can use your time, resources, and voice to stand in the gap, and support the LGBTQIA+ community during this year’s Pride Month.

  • Sign up to volunteer for LGBTQIA+ event.
    • Planning an event can be overwhelming and involve a lot of moving parts. Volunteering your time to help set up, clean up, or advocate during an event would create a lasting impact on inclusivity for the members of the LGBTQIA+ community.
  • Support an LGBTQIA+ business.
    • Find a local LGBTQIA+ owned business and show your support by making a purchase, and/or encouraging friends or family members to do the same.
  • Organize an event for your community.
    • Convene an event focused on providing an inclusive and safe space for LGBTQIA+ members. This could be a lunch and learn about the LGBTQIA+ community and its history, an art showcase, festival, or even something more intimate like a live podcast taping.
  • Donate to a charitable LGBTQIA+ cause
    • Many organizations are able to provide a safe space and resources for the LGBTQIA+ community because of generous donations from people who believe in equality. Make a donation to an organization to keep those resources readily available for LGBTQIA+ members.

Organizations Supporting the LGBTQIA+ Community

When looking to celebrate Pride Month it can be helpful to be surrounded by the entities that are already doing the work and connecting with their community. There are dozens of organizations with a mission of offering support for the LGBTQIA+ community. Here are just a few to help you get started.
