On Thursday January 22nd, join us for Words Beyond Walls, Golf Pencil Group and Pongo Poetry Project’s upcoming event!

Teaching artists and writing mentors from Golf Pencil Group and Pongo will share readings of poetry and prose authored by the systems-impacted folks each of our organizations serve. The event will also include a panel conversation, featuring teaching artists and poetry mentors from our organizations as they speak to their experiences of supporting systems-impacted folks through creativity, and the necessity of offering such outlets for those who are so often silenced and forgotten.

Words Beyond Walls will represent the culmination of a weekslong partnership leading up to the event. This fall, Golf Pencil Group will invite those they serve to write poetry and prose inspired by pieces of Pongo youth poetry. And Pongo will do the same, using the work of Golf Pencil Group writers as the inspiration for a series of poetry workshops. In essence, the work you’ll hear at the event will reflect a dialogue between the folks Golf Pencil Group and Pongo serve, facilitated through their expressive writing.

About Golf Pencil Group

Golf Pencil Group offers bi-weekly creative writing classes for women incarcerated in the King County Correctional Facility (KCCF) in downtown Seattle and for people transitioning from incarceration, addiction, homelessness, in-patient psychiatric care, or other challenges at Aspen Terrace, a housing complex operated by Pioneer Human Services in Seattle.

We are a cohort of Seattle teaching artists who bring creative writing practices to adults surviving incarceration and trauma. We envision a world of collective care and healing, and we affirm our students as agents in their own empowerment and transformation.

About Pongo

Pongo Poetry Project is a 30-year-old Seattle-based non-profit whose mission is to engage youth in writing poetry to inspire healing and growth. Pongo was founded on the knowledge that poetry writing offers a unique vessel for healing from devastating trauma.

At the heart of the program is the Pongo Method, an evidence-based, trauma-informed technique for teaching poetry, created in collaboration with child psychiatrists, expressive writing therapists, and academics. Pongo has developed an approach to help youth write about painful life experiences – often for the first time – in a way that promotes insight and healing.
